Here’s our latest update on the Royal Resorts 2018 turtle season. Royal Resorts security personnel, our turtle guardians, have already released the first 3,822 baby turtles of the season so that they can scuttle down the beach and disappear into the waves to begin life at sea. We hope that in 12 to 15 years time the females born this year will return to the same beaches in Cancun to lay their own eggs.

There are currently 158 nests in the corrals at The Royal Sands, The Royal Caribbean and The Royal Islander with 18,987 eggs.

Staff at Grand Residences to the south of Puerto Morelos are watching over 22 nests in the resort corral. Fifteen of the nests contain eggs laid by green turtles and seven by loggerhead turtles. To date, 432 baby turtles have been released.

It has been a slow Royal Resorts 2018 turtle season with fewer nests this summer. Turtle nesting is cyclical with a good year always followed by a slow season like this year. The 2017 Royal Resorts turtle nesting season was record-breaking with 1,063 nests and 111,226 baby turtles. We hope that next year the turtles will return to the beaches of the Mexican Caribbean in larger numbers to lay their eggs.

Royal Resorts has been protecting turtles since 1985. Since 1998 when official record keeping began, it has protected 8,153 nests and released 744,864 baby turtles, with thousands more still to hatch this season.
