Sea turtle nesting season continues in the Mexican Caribbean and here is the latest update from our turtle guardians at Royal Resorts in Cancun. As of October 13 there were 244 nests in the turtle nurseries at The Royal Sands, The Royal Caribbean and The Royal Islander with a total of 27,755 eggs.
The first 282 babies of the season hatched in mid-August at The Royal Sands and since then 15,521 hatchlings have been set free. In the weeks to come many more will make their way down the beach in a mad dash to reach the ocean.
Due to new Federal regulations in effect this year to keep human contact with turtles to a minimum, guests are no longer permitted to participate in turtle releases. Our turtle guardians wait until dusk has fallen and the frigate birds and seagulls that would swoop to catch the hatchlings have gone to roost before releasing them to scuttle across the sand towards the waves.
We will keep you posted on more turtle news from Royal Resorts and Grand Residences.
