Here’s the latest update from our turtle guardians at Royal Resorts in Cancun. As of July 7, the tally of sea turtle nests at The Royal Sands had reached 57 with 6,806 eggs and at The Royal Caribbean and The Royal Islander there are now 112 nests with 13,145 eggs. At Grand Residences, just to the south of Puerto Morelos, the turtle corral now has 18 nests with 2,173 eggs.
All the turtles registered to date during the 2015 turtle nesting season have been green turtle (tortuga blanca or verde) with the exception of two loggerheads (caguama) and two hawksbills (carey). One green turtle laid a staggering 188 eggs on July 4, beating earlier record clutches of 155 and 161 on July 5.
The numbers of turtles coming ashore to nest has increased considerably over the past few days and on the night of July 7, 10 nests were registered and then transferred to the turtle nursery at The Royal Caribbean.
It is still early in the season for any of the eggs to hatch but as soon as the first babies are born we will cover the story here on Royal Resorts News. In the meantime, stay posted for more turtle nesting news from Royal Resorts and elsewhere in the Mexican Caribbean.
