Tropical Depression 16 is moving northwest off the coast of Nicaragua and is expected to become Tropical Storm Nate later today or tonight. It will move across northeastern Nicaragua and eastern Honduras on Thursday and emerge in the Caribbean on Friday. The Mexican government is monitoring its development because its forecast course has it approaching the Yucatan Peninsula and it may affect the northern coast of Quintana Roo on Saturday.
It is currently located about 45 mi./70 km WSW of San Andres Island and 195 mi./315 km SSE of Cabo Gracias a Dios on the Nicaragua/Honduras border. It is moving to the northwest at 7 mph/11 km. Maximum sustained winds are currently 35 mph /55 km. and some strengthening is likely as it moves over the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea.
A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for the coast of Nicaragua from Sandy Bay Sirpi to Punta Castilla in Honduras.
The current position of Tropical Depression 16 is 889 km to the south/southeast of Xcalak on the coast of Quintana Roo, Mexico. Due to its forecast track, it may affect the Riviera Maya and Cancún as a Tropical Storm on Saturday with heavy rain, large waves and windy conditions.
