Calling all runners, start 2017 by signing up for the Second Royal Resorts Foundation Race in Cancun on February 19 and join us in supporting another worthy cause. This time, the Royal Resorts Foundation has partnered with Pro Niños Excepcionales A.C., a Cancun charity that helps children with physical, neurological and mental challenges. We will be helping a man who has devoted his life to caring for sick children but now needs a helping hand himself, Maclovio Tun
At 74 years old, Maclovio is the sole breadwinner for his family, wife Carmen who is paralyzed as a result of a childhood bout of polio, and their son Reyes who has severe cerebral palsy. Their derelict house has a leaking roof, no door and no sanitation facilities and is unfit for them to live in. The goal is to renovate and extend their home, making it a safe, healthy and comfortable space for them.
Maclovio is the sole breadwinner in his family, caring for his wife and his son with dedication and dignity. Pro Niños Excepcionales volunteers first met him 12 years ago when he brought his son on his tricycle to the association’s physiotherapy clinic to request help for the boy. His appeal was granted and in return he helped out at the center cleaning the land and collecting fallen branches to sell as firewood. It soon became evident to staff at the center that he did not have a steady job and after meeting Carmen, it dawned upon them just how precarious Maclovio’s situation was.
In order to help him, Pro Niños Excepcionales hired Don Maclovio to work in its equinotherapy center. To this day, he cleans out the stables, looks after the horses and leads them around the paddock during sessions with children.
Our Race Mission, Rebuilding Maclovio’s House
Maclovio’s house is literally falling down; it was damaged during Hurricane Wilma and the family has never had the money to repair it. Parts of the roof are missing, others leak when it rains and falling tiles, crumbling plaster and rotting wood are a constant risk. There is no front door, a safety issue for such a vulnerable family, only one bedroom, an improvised kitchen, no cupboards or closets and no bathroom. The lack of clean water and sanitary facilities are serious health concerns.
The goal of the Royal Resorts Foundation Race is to raise money to completely renovate Maclovio’s house, adding a second bedroom, a proper kitchen-dining room, a bathroom and the ramps and other mobility aids that Carmen and Reyes desperately need. This project will improve the lives of Maclovio and his family, giving them a home that they will be more comfortable in.
