About Princess Caroline Murat

Born in Paris, Princess Caroline Murat is a direct descendent of Marechal Joachim Murat, commander of cavalry for the Imperial Napoleonic Army, and his wife Caroline, the youngest sister of Emperor Napoleon.

Her musical lineage goes back to the days of Mozart. Her stage name is Caroline Haffner, a tribute to her mother’s family who are descended from Sigmund Haffner, the Mayor of Salzburg and friend of Mozart for whom the composer wrote the Haffner Serenade and Symphony.

Princess Caroline learned to play the piano at an early age in Paris. One of the last pupils of French pianist Alfred Cortot, she also studied with Samson Francois and after winning a series of prestigious prizes in Europe, she was awarded a Fullbright Scholarship and concluded her studies in the United States.

From the early days of her distinguished career, Princess Caroline has won praise for her technical skills, imagination and passion. She has performed in Carnegie Hall and many other prestigious concert venues around the world.

Also a teacher and co-founder of the Verbier Piano Academy in Switzerland, she gives master classes and has established a number of international music festivals, including the New Year Music Festival in Gstaad.

Princess Caroline has always supported young musicians, giving them the opportunity to perform at her festivals. Many talented young artists who made their debut at these events have gone on to have successful careers. They include pianists Denis Kojoukin, David Kadouch and Ji Liu.
