Globally, thousands of turtles die each year entangled in huge shrimping dragnets. Here in Mexico, the Fisheries Institute is taking an important step to prevent such fatalities by implementing new technology that excludes turtles, fish and species such as sea horses from shrimping nets.
In July, Fisheries Institute experts will begin training more than 7,000 fishermen throughout the country. They have identified several key areas in the Gulf of Mexico and the Yucatan Peninsula where shrimping is an important activity and sea turtles are often spotted and will be concentrating their efforts on Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Campeche, Yucatan and Quintana Roo.
