In the early hours of August 27, a 10-meter-wide stretch of the Playa del Carmen-Puerto Morelos highway (Highway 307) was affected by subsidence in front of the Iberostar Playa Paraíso Hotel. Traffic is currently very slow with long delays as the authorities carry out repairs.

Guests staying at The Royal Haciendas and those traveling from the Cancun resorts to Playa del Carmen and other parts of the Riviera Maya in Thomas More Travel vehicles are being transported as far as the Iberostar Playa Paraíso where they then walk a few meters around the affected area before resuming their journey in another vehicle.

As an alternative route to Cancun, take the Playa del Carmen –Nuevo Xcan toll road, motorists will be exempted the toll fees today. Continue your journey on the Merida-Cancun toll road or Highway 180.

Novedades newspaper reported that Cancun International Airport authorities have notified airlines about this problem and passengers traveling to the airport from the Riviera Maya are being accommodated on later flights wherever possible. Please contact the Thomas More Travel desk for more information.

Traffic is expected to return to normal this afternoon, although not all lanes of the highway will be open.
