At the recent Tianguis Turístico Travel Fair in Cancún, Mexican airline Interjet announced a new route from Cancún to Palenque Airport, in northern Chiapas. This will make it much easier to visit the beautiful ancient Mayan city of Palenque, one of the treasures of the Maya World and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. By road, the journey to Palenque from Cancún currently takes between nine and 10 hours.

Interjet also has a new route from Toluca to Cancún and intends to make Mérida its regional hub for flights to destinations in southeast Mexico, thus facilitating access to other Maya World attractions.

Another Mexican airline Aeromexico has boosted the number of flights from Monterrey to the Mexican Caribbean and added a new route to Cancún from the colonial cities of Aguascalientes and San Luis Potosí. It also announced that it is laying on additional flights from Rio de Janeiro to Cancún via Mexico City at the end of June to meet growing demand.

In October, Condor Airlines and TUI Travel will be inaugurating direct flights from Stockholm and Oslo.

Starting November 2, Southwest Airlines will lay on daily nonstop flights to Cancún from San Antonio, Austin, Chicago Midway and Orange County, California (source: Travel Weekly).

Several airlines from European, Brazil and Russia are expected to confirm new routes or additional flights to Cancún before the year is out.
