The first 92 baby green turtles of the 2014 sea turtle nesting season hatched on August 11 at Grand Residences Riviera Cancun, our latest luxury resort nestled on a pristine beach just to the south of Puerto Morelos.
Guests were invited to watch the tortuguitas or tiny turtles being released at 8 p.m. and witnessed them scuttling down the beach spurred on by the call of the waves. In 12 to 15 years, some of them will hopefully return to lay their own eggs on the very same beach.
There are currently four turtle nests in the corral at Grand Residences and more turtles will come ashore to lay their eggs on the beach in the weeks to come.
In other Royal Resorts turtle news, 135 nests with 15,348 eggs are now being protected in the corrals at The Royal Sands and The Royal Caribbean in Cancún. The number of baby turtles that have already hatched and been released to begin life at sea stands at 237.
