On March 28 at 8:30 p.m. (local time), Royal Resorts is participating in the global Earth Hour campaign organized by WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature or World Wildlife Fund) to draw attention to the dire effects of climate change and the urgent need to protect the one thing that unites us all, the Planet. Millions of people, more than 7,000 cities and famous buildings throughout the world will turn their lights off for one hour and take up the Earth Hour call to action. One planet. One future.
Non-essential lights will be turned off at Royal Resorts during the hour and members and guests are invited to join in by dimming the lights in their villas, attending our special events and thinking about what they can do to reduce their carbon footprint and help heal the Earth.
Earth Hour at The Royal Haciendas
At The Royal Haciendas members, guests and staff will gather on the beach to see the Earth Hour 60+ motif, which will be formed by balloons illuminated with neon lights.
Staff will represent the four elements: Earth, Wind, Water and Fire in a moment of reaffirmation of our bonds to them.
A special Earth Hour a la carte menu will be available for dinner from 6 p.m. with live music from 7 p.m.
When the lights are turned off at 8:30 p.m. there will be time for a moment of quiet reflection on what each one of us can to do protect the planet and fight climate change followed by a water drum and neon light display.
Commemorative t-shirts will be on sale during the day with all proceeds going to the Royal Resorts Foundation community and conservation causes.
Earth Hour at the Royal Resorts in Cancun
In additional to the dimming on non-essential lights at The Royal Sands, The Royal Caribbean, The Royal Islander and The Royal Cancun, several of the Royal Resorts restaurants are also participating in Earth Hour.
La Veranda restaurant at The Royal Sands will have special Earth Hour décor, live piano music and a commemorative Earth Hour cake for diners to enjoy. The lights will be turned off symbolically at 8 p.m. and diners will enjoy their meal by candlelight.
The lights will also be turned off for Earth Hour at Cayo Largo in The Royal Islander and Tradewinds at The Royal Caribbean as dinners enjoy their meal and there will be Earth Hour-themed surprises for the children.
Grand Residences by Royal Resorts
Earth Hour activities for children and families will also take place throughout the day at Grand Residences, our luxury beachfront property to the south of Puerto Morelos in Riviera Cancún.
The program kicks off at 9 a.m. with t-shirt painting and will be followed by a session on the history of the Earth. At 11 a.m. guests can try their hand at making art from recycled materials and at noon there’s a painting contest. Children can line up at 2 p.m. to get their face painted as a panda, the famous World Wide Fund for Nature symbol, their favorite animal or even an Earth Hour hero like Spiderman. At 3 p.m. guests are invited to join Grand Residences staff on the shoreline for a spot of beach cleaning and stay on for the World in Sand activity at 4 p.m. At 8:30 p.m. it’s lights out for Earth Hour.
Spreading the Green Message
At Royal Resorts, the role of environmental stewardship is taken very seriously and it is always looking for ways to expand the green initiatives already in place at its resorts in Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Puerto Morelos. The Mesoamerican Reef Tourism Initiative or MARTI has already certified all the Royal Resorts properties as being resorts with eco-friendly policies.
Green programs already operating at Royal Resorts include recycling, using energy-efficient technology, saving water, substituting cleaning products for eco-friendly alternatives, composting, planting native species and sowing herb patches in the gardens. Other activities range from beach cleaning and turtle protection to environmental education, purchasing regional products and supporting conservation and sustainable development. The green philosophy extends throughout the company and employees attend workshops on recycling, water conservation and other ecological topics.
In 2013, a team of 15 employees was trained as sustainability experts and they now give workshops to their fellow employees on environmental protection, social responsibility and even the importance of wellbeing and mental health. The message they share spreads through the company and staff transmit it to their families and into the community, helping to raise awareness and work for change.
