On March 29 at 8:30 p.m., Royal Resorts took part in Earth Hour, the global campaign organized by WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature or World Wildlife Fund) to draw attention to the effects of climate change and the urgent need to protect the one thing that unites us all, the Planet. This year, Spiderman was the Earth Hour ambassador and highlighting the fact that we can all be super heroes to combat global warming, save resources and support conservation, the official slogan is “Use your Power to Make Change a Reality.”
Non-essential lights were turned off around the resorts and members and guests were invited to join in by dimming the lights in their villas and attending special Earth Hour events.
The evening began at The Royal Haciendas with a Royal Resorts Foundation Earth Hour event featuring Spiderman face painting, balloon twisting and the sale of 60+ cup cakes in support of the Foundation’s conservation cause. A Spiderman Neon Light and Mayan Fire Show followed and at 8:30 p.m. members and guests joined staff for the 60+ candle ceremony.
La Veranda restaurant at The Royal Sands had special Earth Hour décor and diners were able to sample a commemorative cake during Fajitas Night.
At Grand Residences, Earth Hour events took place throughout the day, and started with an interesting talk by the resort biologist on the area’s rich flora and fauna and precious ecosystems, the need for conservation and sustainable development. Guests were then invited to a tree planting ceremony. Each family was given a native tree to plant and the sapling will have a plaque with the family’s name so that each time they visit their home away from home they can monitor its growth. Heaven Beach Bar was the venue for a candlelit Earth Hour cocktail and show when the lights were turned off at 8:30 p.m. Resort Manager Carlo Bicaci spoke about the importance of Earth Hour and the measures that Grand Residences and Royal Resorts are implementing to protect the environment.
