In May (May 6-9), Cancún is hosting the Mexican Tourism Tianguis, one of the world’s most important travel fairs and work is underway in the Hotel Zone and Downtown to give the destination a facelift.
The work program includes improving facilities at the public beaches (access ramps, rest room facilities, garbage bins), removing unlicensed billboards and booths, cleaning and painting buildings, landscaping and highway improvements, among others.
Kukulcán Boulevard, Luis Donaldo Colosio Boulevard and major downtown avenues are also being resurfaced. As part of a long-term plan to revitalize the Cancun city center, Tulum Avenue is being redesigned and modernized. Traffic lanes are being widened, pavements are being replaced and cables moved underground. When completed, it will feature a bike track, new pedestrian zones and landscaped areas.
In other parts of the city, parks in disrepair are receiving some much-needed attention, with brigades planting native species of trees such as ciricote, ceiba and cedar. The ambitious reforestation plan could reach up to 1,000,000 trees planted in the next five years and will involve the participation of local people as they are being asked to “adopt” the seedlings in their local park and keep them watered.
