One of the most beautiful birds found in the Yucatan jungle is the black headed trogon (Trogon melanocephalus), a shy species with a bright yellow breast, a thin band of white separating the yellow from its black throat plumage, a light blue ring round the eye and a distinctive black and white barred tail.
Trogons are usually elusive but this season large numbers of them have been spotted in Cancún and other urban areas. Local conservationists have yet to discover the reasons for this, citing possible factors such as the birds searching for food, deforestation and drought. If you happen to come across one of these birds at your resort, please let staff know so that they can report the sighting to Amigos de Sian Ka’an.
