A presidential decree in 2012 led to the creation of a new protected area to preserve the northern wetlands, coast and marine ecosystems of the island of Cozumel. Cancún-based NGO Amigos de Sian Ka’an played an important role in the establishment of this reserve which will safeguard ecologically rich but fragile habitats.
