Cancún reported the best occupancy figures for years in December, January and February and here at Royal Resorts overall occupancy stands at 89.73% for week 8. In other positive news for tourism in the Mexican Caribbean, the Cancún Airport Authority (ASUR) welcomed visitor number 14 million on December 31. The Riviera Maya reported that it received 3,895,548 visitors in 2012, a 7.9 percent increase on 2011. The Mexican Tourism Board also pointed to a record-breaking year in 2012. Numbers were boosted by the interest in the Mayan calendar; more than two million people visited the archaeological sites of Quintana Roo in 2012, such as Tulum and Cobá (source: INAH), and many of them would have also been to Chichén Itzá and other sites in the state of Yucatán.
