Now a subsidiary of Southwest Airlines, Airtran will be offering new flights to Cancun from Denver and Austin during the spring and summer. The Denver service starts up on April 16 and will be daily until July 7, then operating four times a week until August 12 and weekends only until the end of September. Flights from Austin begin on May 25 and there are four a week until August 31 and three until September 28. From June 3, it will also be offering a daily non-stop flight from Chicago Midway Airport to Cancun.

Canadian airline WestJet will be expanding its flight network to Mexico in 2012, including new services to Cancun.

Aeromexico recently announced that in July 2012, Cancun Airport will become one of the hubs in its flight network and that it will receive additional flights from New York, South America, the Caribbean and other cities in Mexico.

Brazilian and Argentinean airlines are expected to expand their Cancun connections during 2012 and in more Latin American airline news, Lan Airlines also announced that it will be adding three more flights to Cancun from Santiago in Chile and Lima in Peru in August.

At the end of March, Mexican airline Volaris inaugurated flights to link the cities of Leon and Aguascalientes in central Mexico with Cancun.  Departures will be on Thursday and Sunday from Leon – the nearest airport to the colonial cities and UNESCO World Heritage Sites of San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato, and Saturday and Monday from Aguascalientes, another historical treasure.
