Visitors to Cancún and the Riviera Maya now have a new and very Mexican evening entertainment option to enjoy. Opened on December 23, Xoximilco is the latest offering from the Xcaret Group, a park that takes its inspiration from the famous floating gardens and canals of Xochimilco on the outskirts of Mexico City, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
An area of abandoned sascaberas or limestone quarries five minutes to the south of Cancun International Airport and en route to Puerto Morelos has been restored and reforested with 100,000 native plants and trees, including cedar, mahogany and several varieties of palms to create the new park. It has been transformed into colorful gardens and forest clearings and an enchanting chain of canals along which visitors will sail in flower-festooned boats known as trajineras. During their three-hour journey under star-filled skies, they will enjoy a Mexican fiesta with delicious traditional cuisine, mariachi serenades and other live music. The park is open from 6 to 11 p.m.
Earlier this year, the Xcaret Group also inaugurated a new tour called Xenotes, Oasis Maya that showcases the Ruta de Cenotes near Puerto Morelos. Xenotes, Oasis Maya gives tourists the opportunity to visit four different cenotes in one day and try their hand at snorkeling, rappel, zip lining and kayak, in addition to renewing their contact with nature.
Expert guides accompany visitors during the adventure activities. They point out native flora and fauna spotted along jungle trails, explain how cenotes are formed and their importance as sacred sites for the ancient Maya, and tell them about Mayan mythology, including the tale of the Aluxes, the guardian spirits of the forest.
