A sign of the Mexican Caribbean’s popularity in the global tourism market, in 2013, Cancun International Airport welcomed around 50 new scheduled and charter flights from cities in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Spain, Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Russia and the Ukraine.
To cater to growing demand, major airlines are laying on extra flights. American Airlines recently expanded its flight network with new flights from Chicago to Cancun and Cozumel and from Miami to Cozumel; two more daily flights were also added from Dallas to Cancún. Following the lead of Aeromexico, which now flies direct from Los Angeles to Cancún, Delta has a daily flight starting December 19. Air France is offering five flights a week from Paris during the winter season and British Airways and Virgin Airlines are expected to expand their services in 2014.
Members who wish to see more of Mexico during their vacation may be interested in visiting the colonial cities and UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Oaxaca and Morelia, now possible due to new direct flights from Cancún operated by Viva Aerobus and Volaris respectively. Other options include getaways to Mexico City, Guadalajara and Puebla and to the colonial heartland known as El Bajío to explore the twin cities of Guanajuato and San Miguel Allende, also World Heritage Sites.
In the second week of December, the Airport also announced that it had welcomed passenger number 15 million, a Mr. Ilya Salkin, arriving on an American Airlines flight. In 2012, the record stood at 14.5 million passengers.
