Visitors are returning to the Mexican Caribbean in large numbers. Cancun and the Riviera Maya are among the most popular international destinations for US travelers searching for sunny destinations to escape the winter chill. Cancun airport is welcoming more passengers than the same period in 2019 before the pandemic.
The State of Quintana Roo is in the green light stage in the Mexican epidemiological risk monitoring system with a low incidence of COVID-19 cases and patients in COVID-19 wards. The hospitalization level for the second week of November was 4.5% for the state. The majority of the adult population in the state has been vaccinated. Hygiene measures such as social distancing and mandatory face mask use are still in force.
The Mexican Government announced that security in the state will be reinforced further with an additional 1,400-strong brigade of the National Guard which will patrol in tourist destinations in coordination with the police.
