With 55,434 baby turtles released, more than double the number in 2014, the 2015 season certainly reflects the widely held belief of conservationists that a slow year for nests is followed by a busy one. In 2015, our turtle guardians protected 527 nests at The Royal Sands, The Royal Caribbean and The Royal Islander. At Grand Residences the season tally was 69 nests and over 5,000 baby turtles released.
Since 1998, when record keeping began, Royal Resorts has protected 6,686 nests and released 604,309 hatchlings to begin life at sea.
In other turtle news, it is estimated that more than one million turtles hatched this year with around 15,000 nests registered in four areas of the state alone: the Cancun-Puerto Morelos area (Benito Juarez municipal district), Isla Mujeres, Contoy and Xcacel-Xcacelito. If one adds Akumal, Cozumel, Sian Ka’an and other stretches of the shoreline that are nesting sites, the number increases further.
In Benito Juarez, 8,584 nests were registered, breaking the 2013 season record of 7,899.
