Puerto Morelos is one of the Quintana Roo municipalities that will benefit from a CONAFOR (National Forestry Commission) reforestation initiative to rescue patches of jungle that have been ravaged by fire or hurricanes in recent years and restore them to their natural beauty.

CONAFOR has assigned $59.7 million pesos to support 56 individual reforestation projects in the districts of Puerto Morelos, Felipe Carrillo Puerto, José María Morelos, Balacar and Othon P. Blanco, affecting a total area of 2,889 hectares.

The area will be planted with 1,927,500 saplings of mahogany, cedar, ramon or breadnut, ciricote and chacteviga, all native species and important as a source of food for wildlife and for sustainable forestry.
