Good news for Cancun visitors who take extended vacations and like to see more of Mexico. Mexican airline Interjet has a new route linking Cancun to the colonial city of Oaxaca, starting on October 27.

Oaxaca is one of Mexico’s colonial treasures and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Rich in history and traditions, it is full of gracious old churches and mansions, squares, museums and markets.

Famous for its cuisine, mezcal, folk art and festivals, Oaxaca City lies at the heart of an area with an enormous cultural and natural heritage. On a hill overlooking the city and with panoramic views of the mountains is the archaeological site of Monte Alban. More archaeological sites like Mitla, Dainzu and Lambityeco are further afield and there are 16th-century churches and monasteries for history buffs. Visitors can also shop for folk art in the villages of San Bartolo Coyotepec, Atzompa and Ocotlan de Morelos for ceramics, Teotitlan del Valle for weaving and San Martin Tilcajete for carved alebrije figures.

The Cancun-Oaxaca flight will operate on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.
