Mexico’s improving regional flight network is making it easier for Cancun visitors to explore different parts of the country. The latest addition is a new flight offered by TAR Airline from Cancun to the port city of Campeche.
There will be two flights a week from Cancun to Campeche, a colonial city famous for its ramparts and forts built in the 17th century to defend the community from the attacks of pirates. The fortifications and a collection of churches and mansions earned Campeche a place on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
Campeche is the capital of the state of the same name and an excellent base for exploring its many historical and natural attractions. They include the ancient Mayan sites of Edzna, Xpujil, Becan, Chicanna, Balamku and the once mighty city of Calakmul, another UNESCO World Heritage Site deep in the jungle in the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve in the south of the state.
In other flight news, Southwest Airlines has applied to offer new flights from Los Angeles to Cancun, Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos. If approved by the US Department of Transportation, the airline will begin twice-daily flights to Cancun and Los Cabos and a daily flight to Puerto Vallarta on November 6, 2016.
