Mission accomplished! The Royal Resorts Foundation is excited to announce that the playground in Parque Cancun which was the cause we chose to support with the 2023 Royal Resorts Foundation Race is now up and running and ready to provide hours of fun for the children of Cancun.
The colorful games are designed for all children to play on, including those with visual and mobility challenges. Swings, slides and climbing frames are connected by ramps and walkways. There are panels with information on native species and Maya culture in Spanish and Braille, a spinning maze, and other fun features.
Children learn about the chara or Yucatan Jay, the emblem of the park, and the mischievous aluxes, the spirits of Mayan folklore that are the guardians of the corn fields.
A new community space for Cancun residents and visitors, Parque Cancun is taking shape on the original landfill site for the city. The land has been reclaimed and reforested, transforming it into a green space for the community and visitors to enjoy. There are walkways, play areas, quiet corners for yoga and meditation, chess classes and family activities on Sundays. An amphitheater will host concerts and there are palapas for environmental awareness talks. In future stages of the Parque Cancun project, a biodiversity museum, nature trails and other attractions are planned.
Located behind Boulevard Luis Donaldo Colosio near Bonampak Avenue in Downtown Cancun, Parque Cancun lies next to the Manglares de la Laguna Nichupte protected area, and it is a haven for wildlife, such as flocks of Yucatan jays and two species of parrot, pygmy owls and other jungle and wetland birds, coatimundi, opossum, raccoon and grey fox, among others.
From the outset, Royal Resorts has been involved in the development of the park, sending gardeners to help in the landscaping and now helping to build the playground.
The 2023 Royal Resorts Foundation Race took place on February 12 and had a field of 798 competitors. The race events comprise a 10-kilometer and 5-kilometer race for men and women with three age categories: Free (13-39 years), Master (40-49 years) and Veteran (50 years and over), a 3-kilometer walk and 500 meter and 1-kilometer races for children. The race raised $500,000 pesos, which were donated to Parque Cancun for the purchase and installation of the playground.
In past years, the Royal Resorts Foundation Race has supported causes such as helping to build a house for a child with brittle bone syndrome; renovating a home for an elderly couple and their son to help them cope with mobility challenges, installing a kitchen at the Don Bosco community center for vulnerable teenagers; and providing college scholarships for low-income students.
