The Travel Gallery
Here’s our monthly gallery showcasing some of the region’s many natural and historical attractions. How many have you visited? Which ones would you like to explore on future visits to Royal Resorts?
Playa del Carmen
Whether it’s an afternoon on the beach, a visit to the aquarium or shopping, drinks and dinner, this lively beach town and Riviera Maya capital is always worth a visit. La Quinta, Playa’s 5th Avenue, comes alive at dusk, the candles are lit, and lights twinkle in the trees. Musicians strike up and the enticing aromas of world cuisine waft through the air.
Holbox
Wide white beaches, calm aqua-green waters, rustling palm trees and the unhurried pace of life in a Gulf of Mexico fishing community, a trip to the island of Holbox is a must for bird watchers, fishermen, seafood fans and those who simply want to relax, reconnect with nature and enjoy the magic of a spectacular sunset and a starlit night on the shoreline.
Chinchorro
Advanced divers will want to head to Mahahual or Xcalak in southern Quintana Roo for a trip to Chinchorro Atoll. Teeming with marine life, the chain of reefs encircling the calm lagoon holds other secrets. Archaeologists have identified the wrecks of at least 69 boats that have foundered on the jagged corals down the ages during storms. They range from 16th-century Spanish galleons and 19th-centry merchantmen to 20th-century cargo boats and the rusting metal hulks have become a haven for fish, eels, octopus, lobster and conch.
Dzibanche
Deep in the jungle in southern Quintana Roo, the archaeological site of Dzibanche was an important Maya city that prospered from AD 300 to around 1200. The most important temples are the Temple of the Owl, named for a polychrome incense burner unearthed there which is decorated with the face of the sacred bird; Temple I, Temple of the Cormorants, Patio de Xibalba, North and South Plazas, Gann Plaza and the Temple of the Captives.
Two kilometers away, Kinichná is the site of the Acropolis and other buildings decorated with stucco carvings, bas-reliefs and inscriptions.
Thomas More Travel can help you arrange trips to these sites of interest and many more in the Mexican Caribbean and the Yucatan.
