The Island and One August Evening by Victoria Hislop

Victoria Hislop has written extensively about Greece and Spain and these two books tell the story of the Petrakis family; their lives tragically linked to the island of Spinalonga off the coast of Crete. Eleni, the mother, a much-loved teacher in the village, is diagnosed with leprosy and must leave her life and move to the island community. She is followed there after her death by her daughter Maria, who finds friendship among the residents and the doctors in search of a cure for their patients.

Four years later, Maria is cured and returns to the mainland to pick up life with her family, but the celebrations surrounding her return are marred by a crime of passion.

In One August Evening, Hislop captures life in a small Cretan town as Maria picks up the pieces in the aftermath of the murder of her sister. It is a tale of love, redemption and family ties.
