Hurricane Delta is currently located about 320 mi /520 km ESE of Cozumel and 120 mi/190 km SW of Grand Cayman and is now a Category 4 storm as it moves through the Caribbean.
A Hurricane Warning is in effect for the coast of Quintana Roo stretching northwards from Tulum to Dzilam on the Gulf coast of the Yucatan, including Cozumel. A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for the area from Punta Herrero to Tulum and from Dzilam to Progreso.
Delta will approach the northeast coast of Quintana Rooand the Yucatan Channel on Tuesday night, making landfall in the area on Wednesday morning and moving into the Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday afternoon.
Maximum sustained winds are 115 mph/185 km/h. with higher gusts. Hurricane force winds extend outwards up to 25 mi/ 35 km from the center and tropical storm force winds extend up to 90 mi/150 km. Delta is moving towards the west-northwest at 16 mph/26 km. Further strengthening is forecast and it will be a Category 4 hurricane when it moves over the Yucatan Peninsula on Wednesday.
Delta will bring wind, rain, a storm surge of six to nine feet above normal tide levels and large waves along the coast within the hurricane warning area.
Mandatory evacuation order for Cancun Hotel Zone and Puerto Morelos
Due to the forecast track and strength of this storm, the government has ordered the mandatory evacuation of Cancun Hotel Zone. Accordingly, we will be moving guests staying at The Royal Sands, The Royal Islander and The Royal Cancun to designated hurricane shelters in three colleges in Downtown Cancun.
An evacuation order has also been issued for hotels in Puerto Morelos and guests at Grand Residences will be moving to The Royal Haciendas, which is a designated hurricane shelter.
If you are staying at The Royal Sands, The Royal Islander, The Royal Cancun or Grand Residences It is important that you start preparing for evacuation now. Pack a small case or backpack and a carry on bag with a change of clothing, important documents and valuables in a plastic bag and any medication that you need to take with you, snacks, water, flashlight and other small personal belongings. You must also take one pillow and blanket per person. Make sure that your phone is charged.
Place your remaining bags in the bathtub of your bathroom and unplug all electrical appliances.
We expect to begin moving guests starting between 1 and 2 p.m.
Housekeeping service is suspended today except for towels and garbage disposal.
The sale of alcohol is also suspended in resort stores, restaurants and bars. Royal Market will close at 4 p.m. Hacienda Sisal and Captain’s Cove will be closed until further notice.
