The Mexican Caribbean tourism industry has shut down temporarily. The area’s legendary beaches, parks and archaeological sites are closed. Hotels, restaurants and bars are shut and the busy skies above Cancun, usually so full of planes are silent.
In a state that depends so heavily on tourism, the economic crisis is already biting hard. Thousands of hotel workers have been laid off and the State Government is implementing an emergency aid package with measures to help local families and businesses.
However, such is the enduring appeal of this sun-drenched shoreline that travelers are already booking for later in the year and the hope is that once the lockdown is lifted and flights begin again, our visitors will start to return.
