We would like to update Royal Resorts members and guests on the transport situation in Quintana Roo in the wake of the May 29 demonstrations by taxi unions against the new Transport Law passed by the State Congress. After a meeting with Quintana Roo Governor Carlos Joaquin Gonzalez, the leaders of the state’s 17 taxi unions announced that they will not be calling for any more demonstrations or strikes as they continue to negotiate with the authorities. This means that the threat of traffic disruption or delays as a result of their industrial action has disappeared for now.
The new State Transport Law paves the way for the entry of transportation networks such as Uber to operate in the state and the taxi unions see this as a threat to the livelihoods of their thousands of members. The state authorities have pledged to work with the unions to find possible solutions to minimize the economic impact on drivers when the new law comes into effect.
Taxi service is currently available and traffic is circulating normally in Cancun, the Riviera Maya and other parts of the state.
