Riviera Maya was voted the best destination in Mexico in the annual Travel Weekly Reader’s Choice poll, 2011. The awards also keep coming for Cancun, it was declared the winner at the World Travel Awards 2011 in the categories Mexico & Central America’s Leading Beach Destination and Mexico & Central America’s Leading Destination, respectively. The Cancun Convention & Visitors Bureau was also voted Mexico & Central America’s Leading Tourist Board. The winners were announced at a gala ceremony in Montego Bay, Jamaica.
In other news, travel agents in the United States and Canada selected Cancun as the top-selling destination in the annual survey conducted by Recommend Magazine for the fifth year running.
With media attention focusing on the Maya World this year, the Yucatan Peninsula has also made the Frommers Top 10 and Lonely Planet’s recommended travel destinations for 2012.
Tourism planners expect as many as three million additional tourists to the Mexican Caribbean this year (15 million were registered in 2011) drawn by their interest in the Maya culture, and are predicting that the number of visitors to Cancun and the Riviera Maya could grow by between 10 and 15 percent.
