We have some more news for you about highway conditions in Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya, something to take into account if you have rented a car and are planning day trips in the area. Starting Thursday, September 3, maintenance will be carried out on the overpasses or bridges on Highway 307 that cut through Playa del Carmen, causing their phased closure. The repaving project will take around 20 days to complete and work will begin on the north-south lanes of the highway.
The Playa del Carmen overpasses comprise four kilometers of highway and the upper level of the road in the north-south direction will be the first to be closed for repairs. Once it is reopened, work will continue on the lower level with the repaving of the side road.
After work is completed on the north-south side of the highway, it will continue in a south-north direction, beginning with the closure of the upper level of the overpass and then the side road.
By doing the work in stages, the authorities hope to keep disruption to a minimum. However, they strongly recommend that drivers traveling from Cancun to Xcaret, Puerto Aventuras, Akumal, Xel-Ha and Tulum use the alternative route and take the Playa del Carmen ring road or Arco Vial, thus avoiding the road works. The turn off for the ring road is to the north of Playa del Carmen and is clearly marked on the right-hand-side of the highway.
During the repairs to the bridges, the underpass crossings for the city’s most important streets: Avenida Colosio, Avenida CTM, Avenida 34, Constituyentes and Juarez will remain open.
In other news, repairs continue to the stretch of Highway 307 affected by subsidence in front of the Iberostar Playa Paraíso hotel but traffic flow has improved considerably.
