Turtle season is well underway at Royal Resorts and the June 22 tally of nests in the corrals or nurseries at the Cancun resorts was 22 nests with 2,654 eggs at The Royal Sands and 25 nests at The Royal Caribbean and The Royal Islander with 2,699 eggs. At Grand Residences just to the south of Puerto Morelos, the security guards are already watching over eight nests with 967 precious eggs.
All the turtles that have nested to date have been green turtles, tortuga blanca or verde in Spanish.
After heavy rain and wind and no turtle sightings the weekend of June 13 and 14, the evening of June 15 was an extremely busy one for security staff at The Royal Islander with more than 15 turtles coming ashore in the hours between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m.! Many appeared to come ashore to test the sand and left the beach without laying their eggs, only to return later in the week.
Stay posted for more turtle news on this blog during the season.
