With fountains, ponds and peaceful courtyards full of bougainvillea, hibiscus and even roses, the gardens at The Royal Cancun have long been one of its most beautiful features and they now include a botanical garden full of herbs and tropical plants found throughout the Yucatan Peninsula.

A joint project involving the Garden and Activities departments, the garden is located in the courtyard behind Building 6. A path winds between the beds and past native trees and shrubs to a “green” wall or vertical garden and a shaded nursery area.

We thought that members would like to see how the new garden is actually looking. Herbs such as rue, rosemary, mint, basil, epozote, tomatoes, radishes and chilies are shooting up and larger tropical plants include hoja santa, bananas and palms. More native shrubs, palms and trees will be added in the months to come.

Like the produce harvested from the herb gardens at The Royal Sands, The Royal Caribbean and The Royal Haciendas, kitchen staff at The Royal Cancun will be able to put the herbs to good use in the resort’s restaurants and bars.

The Botanical Garden forms part of a larger environmental awareness initiative to be launched at The Royal Cancun later this year with fun activities for children and families.
