The Guelaguetza Fair comes to town in Playa del Carmen this month. Discover the rich cultural heritage of the Mexican state of Oaxaca through its colorful crafts and dress, its delicious cuisine, mellow music and colorful dances.

Sip mescal, indulge with a homemade fruit ice cream and snack on gorditas and mole, the spicy but subtle chocolate-chili sauce that is a specialty in Oaxaca. Ever eaten grasshoppers? Why not try a chapulin? Sprinkled with chili and lime, and fried until crisp, they are a popular snack!

Shop for embroidered blouses and dresses, rugs and wall hangings, barro negro pottery and alebrijes, colorful and whimsical wooden figures that make great souvenirs. Organic soap, liqueurs, candies and coffee are also on sale.

On Saturday April 19, see the Dance of the Eight Regions, the crowning glory of the traditional Guelaguetza Fair held every year in the city of Oaxaca in July.
