Record-breaking Sea Turtle Nesting Season
As the Cancun sea turtle season stands so far, it has been a hectic few months at Royal Resorts. Our Royal visitors from the sea have been very, very busy! As of August 7, 290 turtles have already laid their eggs on the beach in front of The Royal Mayan, The Royal Caribbean and The Royal Islander and the security guards have moved 35,820 eggs to the corral. At The Royal Sands, the tally stands at 146 nests and 17,629 eggs, with seven nesting females recorded one night after several days of rain.

The first 96 baby sea turtles of the year were released on July 6 and since then 4,834 have been set free at both resorts.

The overwhelming majority of the nests are those of green turtles, 11 loggerhead turtles have been registered and interestingly three hawksbills, the smallest species in the Mexican Caribbean and one that usually nests further north.

Stay posted on this blog for more sea turtle news in the months to come.
