Spreading Happiness this 2016, on January 7, Royal Resorts Foundation volunteers visited the village of Leona Vicario to surprise the children at Vicente Guerrero nursery school with toys, the traditional rosca de reyes cake and piñatas.
According to tradition, the Three Kings or Reyes Magos bring Mexican children gifts on January 6, Dia de Reyes or Epiphany. On this occasion, 147 children aged between three and five years were the guests of honor at a surprise party. They took turns to hit the piñata, all rushing in when it broke to collect the candies that showered down. After much fun and party games, they sat down for a slice of cake and fruit juice. As the party drew to a close, they lined up to receive a gift.
From dolls and superheroes to cars, tea sets, board games and footballs, the toys had been collected over the Christmas period at the four Royal Resorts in Cancun and The Royal Haciendas in the Riviera Maya. Foundation volunteers also donated school and art supplies to the school.
Leona Vicario is a rural community where poverty levels are high. Inhabitants earn a meager living from agriculture and forestry or work in tourism and construction in Cancun and the Riviera Maya, many only returning to the village to be with their families at weekends or once a month. For some of these children, the toy they received from the Royal Resorts Foundation was their only Dia de Reyes gift.
The Royal Resorts Foundation would like to thank the Royal Resorts members, guests and staff who supported the Toy Drive. With your generous help we were able to bring a little magic into the day for these children.
