FONATUR, the government agency that oversees landscaping and the upkeep of Cancun, announced the building of a bridge in the Hotel Zone to alleviate traffic congestion in the Punta Cancun area. The bridge will span Bojorquez Lagoon, which is part of the larger Nichupte Lagoon system, from Kilometer 7 to Kilometer 9 on Kukulcan Boulevard, providing an alternative route for vehicles.
Construction of the bridge will begin in 2016 and the project is slated for completion in 2017. With a span of 1206.6 meters, the bridge will be sustained by 28 columns and will have design features to help reduce its impact on the lagoon ecosystem, water circulation and the mangroves on the shoreline.
