Planning a visit to Merida this winter? As part of your sightseeing plan you’ll want
to stroll along the tree-lined Paseo Montejo and marvel at its stately mansions, the legacy of the era of green gold, the henequen boom at the end of the 19th century. Canton Palace is the most famous of these houses and it is now the site of the Regional Anthropology Museum, which plays hosts to a major Mayan exhibition this year. Showcasing priceless ceramics, jade, sculptures and figurines unearthed at sites in Yucatan, Campeche, Quintana Roo, Tabasco and Chiapas, Mayas: the Language of Beauty has been on tour to Mexico City and Beijing, China.
The exhibition will be on show until February 2016.
Other museums you won’t want to miss in Merida are the Casa Museo Montes Molina, a chateau-style home on Paseo Montejo (guided tours Monday to Friday at 9, 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., Saturday 9 and 11 a.m.) and the ultramodern Museo de la Gran Cultura Maya on Prolongacion Montejo. On the main square, La Casa de Montejo is the restored colonial home of the Montejo family, the founders of Merida. Also located in the historic heart of the city are the City Museum on Calle 56 x 65 and 65-A and the Folk Art Museum in La Mejorada neighborhood.
