The Yucatan State Government recently announced the construction of a new museum, billed as the smallest in the world, in Merida. The Casa Maya Museum will pay tribute to the na or traditional thatched cottage that has dotted the Yucatan landscape for 3,000 years and the natural materials and building techniques used. It will show how the Maya lived and still live, the open-air hearth where meals are prepared and the solar or orchard where they grow herbs, vegetables, tend fruit trees and raise livestock.
The new museum will be located in a garden between the Convention Center and the Gran Museo de la Cultura Maya on Prolongacion Montejo in the north of the city.
