The culmination of five years of research in collaboration with the Geological Service of Austria and the Technical University of Denmark, Amigos de Sian Ka’an will soon be publishing a map of the State of Quintana Roo’s hydrological system, which is comprised by a network of underground rivers, cenotes and chains of lagoons.
Using sophisticated electromagnetic mapping techniques to detect water sources deep underground, the study – much of it conducted in the Tulum area –has revealed important findings about connectivity of the hidden rivers, the direction of water flows, the importance of geological features such as the Holbox Fault and the Chicxulub Crater and the distribution of fresh, salt and brackish water. It will be an invaluable tool as State and Municipal governments develop a water management and conservation policy.
