Members staying at The Royal Haciendas who are planning a trip to the nearby island of Cozumel will have a new attraction to look forward to on their next vacation. Starting at the end of January, a Mayan Ceremony will be staged at sunset in honor of Ixchel, the ancient mother goddess, patron of fertility, childbirth, the moon and tides and weaving.
As the sun sets in the west, more than 30 performers will take to the stage to reenact the ritual venerating Ixchel, on this her sacred island. Known as Cuzamil in ancient times (Island of Swallows), Cozumel was the site of shrines to the goddess and pilgrims from all over the Yucatan Peninsula would make the perilous crossing from the mainland in wooden canoes to worship her.
