In 2014, our sea turtle guardians protected 248 nests and 28,450 eggs at The Royal Sands, The Royal Caribbean and The Royal Islander. Later in the season, members and guests helped staff release 25,447 baby turtles.
Grand Residences also joined the Puerto Morelos turtle protection campaign for the first time this year. Resort staff protected 12 nests in the corral and released 915 baby turtles.
In comparison with the record-breaking 2012 and 2013 seasons, 2014 has not been a good year for turtle nesting and this has been reflected in the news from Cancun, Cozumel and the Riviera Maya, all are reporting fewer nests. As turtle nesting is cyclical with a good year generally followed by a slower year, we can only hope that this is the case with 2014 and that the 2015 season will be better.
Official turtle season record keeping began at Royal Resorts in 1998 and to date Royal Resorts has protected 6,524 nests and released 548,756 hatchlings into the sea.
