More spectacular than ever, a new evening show awaits visitors to Xcaret. With a $200 million peso investment in the latest light and sound technology and stage design, the extravaganza features 300 performers, different music, dances and costumes, coming together in a celebration of Mexico, its history and traditions.
The story begins in the days of the ancient Maya and with the ball game prowess of the Hero Twins as related by the Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya. The Owl Dance is also performed; owls were sacred birds and divine messengers, and this ritual is said to herald the coming of the Spaniards and the betrayal of the Tlaxcalteca people.
The arrival of the Spaniards in the Aztec capital Tenochtitlán and their fateful meeting with Emperor Moctezuma, the ensuing Conquest and the coming of Christianity are represented, in addition to the mingling of two races through music, song and shared experiences. Other vignettes pay tribute to the Virgin of Guadalupe and the Mexican Revolution.
The show takes you on a journey the length and breadth of Mexico, showcasing dances, music, legends and fiestas from all its cultural regions. Joyous and moving, it features three traditions in the UNESCO World Heritage list: mariachis, the Papantla Flyers and Pirecua music from Michoacán. Huapango, a musical genre that binds the states of Querétaro, Veracruz, Tamaulipas, Hidalgo, San Luis Potosí and Puebla in the Huasteca region, and the skill and beauty of horse and rider in the art of charrería or Mexican rodeo also play a part.
