The Riviera Maya welcomed more than 3.6 million visitors in 2011, a record for the destination and 7 percent up on the number received in 2010. The figures for January to March are also encouraging and show a five percent increase in the number of visitors when compared to the same period last year.
The statistics for Cancun show a similar story for January and February. Overall, the number of visitors was 21.5 percent greater than for February 2011. There were 16 percent more visitors from the United States, 38 percent more Canadians, 17 percent more Mexicans and 15 percent more British visitors in January and February when compared to the same period in 2011. The trend is expected to continue and occupancy in April was higher than previous years.
The Mexican Tourist Board also reported a 5.8 percent rise in the number of international visitors for the country as a whole in March. The number of visitors from the United States grew by 2.4 percent and Canadians by three percent respectively, over 2011. Other countries such as Brazil (+31.6%), Russia (62.3%), United Kingdom (24.3%) showed larger growth rates.
Mexico is expecting to welcome millions of additional visitors to the Maya World in 2012 as a result of the interest in the Mayan calendar.
