March heralds the start of the sport fishing season in the Mexican Caribbean.
Marlin and sailfish migrate through area waters; dorado and wahoo are plentiful and experienced fishermen will tell you tales of their own epic battles with the giants of the deep.
The best fishing grounds in the area lie to the east of Isla Mujeres, along the Arrowsmith Bank, around Contoy and Holbox islands, and in the deep ocean trench between the Riviera Maya and the island of Cozumel. Easily identified by the strip of indigo blue water, this abyss is known as the Cozumel Channel.
The lagoons along the Quintana Roo coast offer a different challenge – they are rich in bone fish such as tarpon and snook and attract fly fishermen from all over the world.
