The Mexican Ministry of Tourism announced that the numbers of international visitors to the country in 2011 reached 22.67 million, up 2 percent on 2010 and 0.2 percent above the number registered in 2008, the previous best year. Important increases were registered for visitors from nations such as Brazil, Argentina, Russia and the United Kingdom.
This trend is continuing with tourist areas such as Cancun and the Riviera Maya also reporting high occupancy rates for January and February. The Mexican Government forecasts that millions of additional visitors will travel to the Maya World in 2012 as a result of the interest in the Mayan calendar.
