Swimming with Dolphins

Intelligent, playful and graceful, dolphins have captured our imagination since the dawn of time. If you have ever seen them escorting a boat into harbor with the sunlight gilding their fins to liquid gold, you have probably wondered what it would be like to swim with them.

You can enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience during your vacation in the Mexican Caribbean.

Book your day with the dolphins through Thomas More Travel, the in-house travel agency. A variety of dolphin swims and encounters are available at Dolphin Discovery on Isla Mujeres, Puerto Aventuras, Xcaret and Xel-Ha parks in the Riviera Maya and the Cancun Aquarium and Nizuc Park in Cancun.

As you prepare for your dolphin swim, the trainer will introduce you to these friendly and engaging marine mammals and give you a short briefing about their behavior. Then you join them in the pool to swim and play. Imagine the thrill of being towed through the water, pushed up into the air and even kissed by a dolphin! Some companies even offer Trainer for a Day programs for you and your children so that you can learn more about dolphins as you help staff look after them.

Snorkeling and Diving

Not all the area’s wonders are on dry land. The world’s second longest reef system, the Mesoamerican Reef, stretches along the coast of the Mexican Caribbean, south into Belize.

Surpassing even the rain forest in terms of biodiversity, coral reefs are the richest ecosystem on the planet, and the Mesoamerican Reef lives up to the billing. It boasts spectacular coral formations, over 500 species of fish and other colorful marine creatures.

The reefs range from challenging walls, caves and canyons in deep water for advanced divers to shallow, sheltered inlets suitable for snorkeling.

One of the world's leading dive destinations, Cozumel owes its fame to the clarity of the water - visibility can be up to 200 feet -, the mighty Palancar Reef and the drop offs or walls that tumble down into the impenetrable dark of an ocean trench thousands of feet deep.

Dive and snorkeling trips in the Cancun-Isla Mujeres area, the Riviera Maya and Cozumel can be booked through Thomas More Travel or the water sports desk manned by resident PADI instructors.

Wreck dives and night dives are also available and keen divers may also be interested in longer excursions to Banco Chinchorro, an immense coral atoll and ships’ graveyard off the coast of southern Quintana Roo.

Certified cave divers can also sign up for cavern diving trips to explore the cenotes (limestone sinkholes) and underground rivers of the Riviera Maya, the longest in the world.

What are you waiting for? Take the plunge and explore our underwater paradise. Book your scuba diving adventures with Thomas More Travel.
