Water Wonderland

Water Wonderland

Want to know how we keep cool? We take to the water. The Mexican Caribbean is a giant aquatic playground offering a variety of exciting activities on or below the surface and Thomas More Travel will help you plan your watery fun.

On the Surface
Try your hand at water skiing, windsurfing or the area’s new craze, kite boarding. Take to the waves in a sailboat – complimentary use of sailboats is included in your Royal Resorts membership –, sign up for a jungle tour through the Nichupte Lagoon on your own wave runner, or a kayak trip along the Riviera Maya coast.
Fishermen will be keen to set sail in search of marlin, sailfish, wahoo and tuna. Good fishing spots are the Yucatan and Cozumel Channels, and the deeper waters to the east of Isla Mujeres.

Water WonderlandCool off with a Cruise
If windsurfing and waterskiing sound too energetic let the crew do all the work as you set sail for Isla Mujeres. You can charter a luxury yacht from the Royal Yacht Club Marina and plan your own seafaring adventure with Thomas More Travel; day cruises and custom-designed trips are also available.
Nature lovers can board an eco-cruise to the island bird sanctuary of Contoy and there are catamaran trips from Cancun and Punta Maroma in the Riviera Maya.
As the sun goes down and rose-colored clouds scud across the darkening sky, a fleet of galleons and cruise boats casts off for an evening of water-borne entertainment. Your options include romantic lobster dinner cruises and Caribbean beach parties to a battle between buccaneers followed by Pirate’s Night revels.

Water WonderlandThe World beneath the Waves
Go below the surface on your next visit to the Mexican Caribbean and discover a whole new world. The world’s second longest coral reef system is right on the doorstep. This chain of coral formations begins to the north of Cancun and stretches down the Quintana Roo coast into Belizean waters where it forms a continuous coral wall over 160 miles long. The Belize Barrier Reef is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Many of the coral formations lie in shallow, sheltered and clear waters where visibility can reach 200 feet. Marine life is abundant along the reef: over 400 species of fish have been identified in the Caribbean and 70 varieties of coral, not to mention crustaceans, anemones, sponges and algae, inhabit this strange and colorful world.
Don your mask and flippers and go exploring. You’ll see regal angel fish, diminutive damsel fish and sergeant majors jealously guarding their territory, and gaudy parrotfish grazing on the coral. Stingrays disappear in a cloud of sand and sea turtles serenely glide by. A flash of silver scales buffeted by breaking waves and ocean currents, shoals of jacks and grunts cluster around the coral buttresses. Lobsters and moray eels lurk in coral crevices and the lords of the reef, the groupers, survey their realm.
Start your underwater discoveries by learning how to snorkel. Thomas More Travel will take you to the reefs of Punta Nizuc, Puerto Morelos and to the caletas or natural inlets at Xel-Ha and Yalku. You can even charter a boat and escape fellow swimmers on your own snorkeling adventure.
If you enjoyed snorkeling, why not learn how to dive? Sign up for a resort course and after a few sessions in the pool you’ll be ready to start exploring deeper waters. The reefs in the Cancun-Isla Mujeres Marine Park are a good place to start as there are a number of dive sites suitable for beginners.
If you already know how to dive, sign up for trips to more challenging reefs in the Cancún-Isla Mujeres area, the Riviera Maya (Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Aventuras-Xpu-Ha and Akumal) and Cozumel, one of the world’s most famous dive destinations. If you want to go further afield, ask about dive trips to Chinchorro Bank, a coral atoll off the coast of southern Quintana Roo that offers double the diving thrills: the reef kingdom and a ships graveyard of Spanish galleons, 19th-century schooners and rusting cargo boats.

Expert open water divers may be interested in taking a cave diving certification course (available from some local dive centers) and exploring a mysterious world that is only just revealing its secrets, the cenotes and underground rivers of the Riviera Maya. Cenote dive trips (for certified cave divers only) are available and some cenotes are also suitable for snorkeling.

Saving the Sea Turtles

Saving the Sea Turtles

The sea turtle season is drawing to a close with fewer and fewer female turtles emerging from the sea at night to lay their eggs on the beaches of the Mexican Caribbean. To date, Royal Resorts security guards have protected 308 nests and 36,885 eggs (including some that fail to hatch and stillborns) at The Royal Sands, The Royal Mayan, The Royal Caribbean and The Royal Islander. Much to the delight of guests and employees alike, the weekly baby turtle releases are still in full swing; 11,178 hatchlings have already been set free and 18,573 eggs have yet to hatch.
This year, nine hawksbill turtles, the smallest of the four species found in area waters, joined the green and loggerhead turtles that normally nest on the beaches in front of the resorts.

Cancun NewsBeach News
The Mexican Tourism Secretary Rodolfo Elizondo recently announced that work to restore Cancun’s beaches will take place during the first quarter of 2009. The financing for this project and the methods that will be used to pump sand on to the stretch of shoreline between Punta Cancún and Punta Nizuc and reduce coastal erosion once the beaches have been restored are still being discussed by members of the scientific community, government officials and tourism industry representatives. There are at least three different projects on the table and a 10-year protection plan has also been proposed. More details are expected in the next couple of months, keep checking E-News from Paradise for additional updates.

Cancun NewsCancun wins World Travel Award
Cancun recently received the Best Beach Destination in the Caribbean and Central America award at the 2008 World Travel Awards in Orlando. Thousands of travel agents throughout the world take part in an annual poll to choose the winners and their vote of confidence reflects Cancun’s diverse attractions and the quality of the tourist services available.

Moving House
Sadly for Cancun, the Museum of Mexican Popular Art in El Embarcadero has closed its doors and will be relocating to a new home in Xcaret. The craft museum will shortly be re-inaugurated in the park’s Henequen Hacienda and is worth a visit, so save space on your busy Xcaret schedule!

Cancun NewsMerida Autumn Cultural Festival
After recent performances by Placido Domingo in Chichen Itza and the BBC London Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra’s Homage to the Beatles Concert in Izamal on October 4 and 9 respectively, it is the turn of Merida to become the cultural capital. From October 9, the city plays host to the annual Autumn Festival.
Now in its twenty-fifth year, the month-long festival features concerts, dance, theater, film, poetry readings and literary workshops, conferences, art exhibitions and event for children. It brings local writers and performers together with artists from other parts of Mexico, Europe and Latin America. Events will take place in theaters (Teatro Peon Contreras, Merida, Daniel Ayala and Felipe Carrillo Puerto), cultural centers and the city’s most important parks and plazas.

Cancun NewsTaste of Yucatán
Yucatecan cuisine has to be one of the world’s original fusion cuisines, a subtle blend of ingredients from tropical America, Europe and the Middle East. If you are intrigued by the flavors of local dishes like cochinita pibil, panuchos, sopa de lima and poc chuc that you order every time you come down, you might like to learn how to prepare them. American chef David Sterling offers fun classes at the Los Dos School in Merida. A special seasonal course showcasing the traditional dishes served during Hanal Pixan, the Mayan Day of the Dead festival is also available, October 29 – November 3. Thomas More offers a variety of trips to Merida, contact tourdesk@royalresorts.com for details and information about Los Dos.

Chichen Itza Airport Reopens
The airport at Kaua near Chichen Itza reopened earlier this month to receive flights from other parts of Mexico and neighboring countries, bolstering Yucatan’s position as one of the gateways to the Maya World.

Cancun NewsWhale Shark Day
Earlier this summer, the island of Holbox played host to marine biologists from more than 40 countries who were attending the International Whale Shark Conference. The event provided an opportunity to share research on this elusive creature and discuss conservation issues. The attendees also declared August 30 International Whale Shark Day to draw attention to the world’s largest living fish and the threats that it faces.

Cancun NewsThird Festival of Life & Death Traditions in Xcaret
For the third year running, Xcaret Park showcases the Day of the Dead, one of Mexico’s most colorful traditional fiestas, during the Festival of Life & Death Traditions, October 30 to November 2. More than 1,000 volunteers, 719 performers and 39 communities from the Zona Maya in central Quintana Roo will be participating in the four-day event which features theater, dance, audiovisual presentations, music, the ballgame, tours, offerings and rituals. With their flower-laden altars, candlelit processions and offerings of incense and traditional food cooked in honor of the dearly departed, Mayan communities show the world how they observe Hanal Pixan, the Mayan Day of the Dead.
The festival program also includes the play Cada quien su Frida with Mexican actress Ofelia Medina in the starring role, Blues y sombra, celebrando la vida y la muerte, a concert by jazz and blues singer Betsy Pecanins and performances by the Luna Llena theater group.

Cancun NewsChile habanero, now a Yucatecan trademark
Just like tequila, chile habanero now has its own trademark or denominación de origen as it is known in Spanish. This means that only the fiery heart-shaped chiles grown in the tropical climate and limestone soils of the Yucatan can be called chile habanero and marketed as such, rather like champagne. The certification extends to dried chiles, chile pastes and sauces.
Yucatan fought off competition from China, Korea and Spain which all grow similar chiles.
On your next trip why not try the real habanero, Yucatan’s very own chile? Ask for it at the Royal Resorts restaurants and be prepared, a little goes a very long way, it is very hot!

Cancun NewsCenote Discoveries
Despite the fact that the limestone landscape of the Yucatan is peppered with thousands of cenotes, relatively few of these mysterious sinkholes have actually been explored and even fewer are open to the public. Not so in Puerto Morelos where visitors can explore the Ruta de Cenotes (Route of the Cenotes), a jungle trail between an old chicle camp called Central Vallarta and the village of Leona Vicario. The enigmatic natural wells along the route go by names such as Las Mojarras, a local name that alludes to the fish that were plentiful in the days when chicle harvesters roamed the forests in search of chicozapote trees, and Siete Bocas. The trail also leads to Boca de Puma, an underground pool where the air of mystery is palpable and Verde Lucero, an open cenote in a forest clearing where a rustic zip line provides hours of fun.
The latest cenote to open is Kin Ha, 15 kilometers inland from Puerto Morelos. A local landowner discovered the well by watching the movements of the turquoise-browed motmot or toh, a bird that nests in crevices in the limestone walls of cenotes and caves.

Mayan Underworld
Archeologists exploring caves in central Yucatan recently made some amazing discoveries: tiny Mayan temples and platforms in 14 different chambers, some of which are flooded and extremely difficult to get to. Carved doorways, pillars, sculptures, ceramics, cave paintings (red hand prints), human remains and a sacbe (ancient road) leading to a pool in one cave has led the team to speculate that they have discovered sacred sites representing the entrance to Xibalba, the Mayan Underworld. The team of archaeologists from the University of Yucatan and INAH is led by Guillermo de Anda.

Cancun NewsFifth Riviera Maya Jazz Festival
The stage is set for a musical extravaganza in Playa del Carmen in November for the Riviera Maya Jazz Festival. The line up includes Pepe Moran, Beaujean Project, Agua Mala and Hector Infanzon on November 27, Iraida Noriega, Earl Klugh, David Sanborn on November 28 and Luca Littera, Sacbe, Billy Cobham and Fourplay on November 29.

Seventh Yucatan Bird Festival
Just a reminder that Merida and Uxmal are hosting this year’s Yucatan Bird Festival scheduled to take place from November 13 to 16. The event lineup includes conferences, craft, art and photography exhibitions, a “bird watching for beginners” workshop and the annual Xoc Ch’ich bird watching marathon for teams.
For more information on the program and event locations visit www.yucatanbirds.org.mx , email: info@yucatanbirds.org.mx

No Smoking
On August 28, Mexico passed a law banning smoking in enclosed spaces such as restaurants and bars, the workplace and public transport. No smoking signs are now displayed in establishments throughout the country and lawbreakers run the risk of a stiff fine or even arrest.
